Bakersfield Cyclocross

The Bakersfield cyclocross races were really good. There were 2 days of racing and the course was used twice, run opposite direction on day two. I like this format and I liked the course too. There was a good run up, and some technical sections, and grass sections, and some fast sections. The racing was very competitive. Day one I really suffered and could not get going. I wanted to quit, but held on, and then the leader had a flat tire.........Then the next leader had a flat tire! I suddenly found myself in a battle for 2nd place. This was a shock because I really felt bad, but I fought hard and held on, and I took the sprint for 2nd on the day. The guy who I beat was not happy and blamed me for riding his wheel, but I was just hanging on and did my best, but he shouldn't have questioned me because all that did was fire me up! The 2nd day I had a feeling I would feel better and I was right. I started good but took a slight fall and lost the lead and then I was in a group of chasers. This time I did some flyers to break up the chase group as I was feeling a little more frisky. Maybe I should have tried working with the guys to chase the lead dude, but he was gone and the others are pretty strong, so I was just racing for my best possible finish. It came down to me and the same guy from day 1 fighting it out for 2nd place again. I had enough to get a gap in the final portion of the event and take 2nd again, this time uncontested at the line. I was happy with two 2nd place finishes on the weekend, especially on day one where I felt horrible, but it would have been nice to take a win! That's racing and this weekend showed me you never know what will happen..........
